I’ve been following Deborah Boschert’s art quilting work for several years now, and recently was excited to receive an early digital copy of her latest book — the 10th anniversary edition of Art Quilt Collage!

I finally had a chance to sit down and browse Deborah’s book last week, and found it to be such a great source of new inspiration! My own quilting work tends to be fairly precise — cutting accurately, matching seams, getting points to line up just right — but Deborah’s style is quite different, and really got my brain thinking in a new way. This book features so many techniques and suggestions for things I’ve never tried before, like incorporating paint into your art quilts, and layering fabrics in unique ways to achieve different effects.

I was not familiar with the first edition of this book, but this 10th anniversary edition incorporates new artwork and examples from the last 10 years of Deborah’s art and quilt journey. One useful feature I loved are her “Eight Design Guides” that are meant to kickstart your creativity if you feel like you’re stuck staring at a blank page (or blank design wall) without an idea of where to begin. And as an engineer, I was totally onboard with Deborah’s “Design Checklist” that helps you walk through any composition in a measured and methodical way to assess whether it’s working — or whether your pieces needs a few more tweaks.

This is a book I can see myself dipping back into from time to time to jumpstart my creativity by trying something new. You can get your own copy from Deborah herself, directly from C&T Publishing, or any number of other book sources. I hope you’ll check it out!
p.s. As I was browsing this book, I noticed that Deborah was a guest on a recent episode of the Not Your Granny’s Quilt Show podcast. I enjoyed the podcast chat, and recommend giving that a listen as well!
