At QuiltCon earlier this year, the Modern Quilt Guild Board of Directors once again had a “Meet the Board” table in the show hall. Last year we made this quilt to hang behind our table, and this year we added a sign made of quiltlets! I had never seen this concept before, but fellow board member Dianne introduced it to use and once again spearheaded our group effort.
She was introduced to quiltlets by the San Francisco Quilt Guild. They are small quilts with extended side bindings that can be tied together into a larger piece — but can also be rearranged! It’s a fun idea, and Dianne proposed that we made the letters to spell out “MQG BOARD” plus a few others.

I created letter templates for everyone to use based on the MQG’s standard font, and volunteered to make the B quiltlet. Our color palette was again based by the MQG’s logo, and I chose to piece strips together and simply cut out my letter, then raw edge applique it onto a solid blue background that I had already quilted. (We all used solid blue as the letter background for consistency and readability!) You can see how each edge was bound separately, and the two side bindings were extended to have longer tails on each end.

Here are our quiltlets on display last February, with several of the current board members in the background (as well as our quilt from last year). All of the other letters, and the additional quiltlets, were made by my fellow board members. It was a fun way to dress up our table — and hopefully you can look for these same quiltlets at future QuiltCons!

I can’t resist sharing this funny photo as well. When we were prepping our table on Wednesday evening before the show began, we were waiting on the O and R. We all had a good laugh when we realized we had accidentally spelled “MQG BAD.” 😉
